LATE BREAKING NEWS:
AT&T to roll out spam-killing
service
New service promises to cut as
much as 90 percent of unwanted e-mails.
AT&T today said that by the end of the year it will roll out an anti-spam service - using Brightmail's spam-monitoring network - that executives said could cut down unwanted e-mail by as much as 90 percent.
AT&T will offer limited availability of the free service to AT&T WorldNet Service users starting next month, with an official rollout systemwide in the fourth quarter. Customers will be required to opt into the service; that is, they will have to choose to have the spam-filtering service turned on for their accounts.

CyberSisters' comments:
Are you tired of spam? Feeling the effects of information overload? We're hoping that anti-spam services such as the one mentioned here will help get rid of annoying spam mail. However, one small caveat - often, when a new spamming service is introduced it works really well for about 2-3 months, and then the spammers figure out a way to outwit the service. We're not suggesting not to sign up for an anti-spamming service (make sure it's from a reputable company), we are just warning you that it won't be 100% effective.

FACTOID OF THE WEEK:
Women Driving Growth in Online
Shopping
A new survey released Friday predicts that the number of women who plan to shop online this holiday season will jump to nearly six times the number who shopped last year.
The increase will mean that men, who made up 72 percent of online buyers last year, will only account for 58 percent of buyers this year, according to the Holiday Survey conducted by Harris Interactive, a division of polling firm Harris Black International.

TIP: Using Signature Files
What are signature files? Most e-mail and news programs will allow you to have a small file called a 'signature' that can be automatically added to each message you send.
Your signature file can contain anything you like. Common things to include in a signature file:
* your name
* your return e-mail address
* WWW Home page URL
* a favorite quote
The signature file can contain normal text links (including HTML links), but it cannot contain graphics or word processing documents.
Here's some tips on creating and
using effective signature files to promote your online
business every time you send an
e-mail:
1. Learn how to use your e-mail software. The help menu on your email program should provide you with the information you need on creating signature files.
2. If you have multiple promotions or company names you can create a signature file for each situation. Most email programs allow you to create multiple signature files. If your program is only limited to one signature file, consider upgrading to a more comprehensive e-mail program.
3. If you are using more than one signature file, remember to attach the right one to your messages!!
4. Always include contact information (including phone, fax, address etc... not just email/web addresses) in your signature files.
5. Include a brief description
of your promotion - this could be in the form of a teaser question with
an HTML link. Keep it short, since your entire signature file should
be no longer than
six to eight lines.
6. Autoresponder email addresses are also effective on a signature file. (an autoresponder is an email address where they can get information about your product/offer automatically emailed to them). Easy to set up, easy for them to use, and a great way to pass on valuable information.
It costs nothing to use a signature file at the end of e-mail messages, yet many business people neglect to use it to promote their businesses. Don't be one of them!

TERM OF THE DAY:
"E-tailing"
E-tailing means "online retailing", i.e. selling products online or opening
up a web-based storefront. The term is used to describe the selling of
products online using a retail model. While the term "e-commerce" refers
to all forms of commerce online, from online banking to online auctions
and bill payments, the term "e-tailing" is more specific and refers to
business to consumer online shopping through a web store.
CyberSisters’ Comment
I guess if you want to be cool you just add an "e" in front of something and it sounds like you are very "with it". What's next? Could you pass the e-potatoes?

Ripple Effect "Rock"
What's a Ripple Effect Rock? Well, think of a rock thrown in a lake, and how the water ripples outward. This section of the newsletter covers developments and technologies that we think might soon cause a "ripple effect" in business or society.
Ripple Rock for Aug 30, 1999:
Wearable Computers
Believe it or not, there's a handful of companies out there selling wearable computers. Strap the CPU around your waist, slap the keyboard onto your wrist, put on your headgear (a monitor rig attached to a hat) and away you go! Not sure you want to be one with your computer? Well, let's look at some practical applications: Using short-range wireless networks, aircraft mechanics and warehouse managers use them to maintain constant access to critical data. Doctors and nurses access patient records on their rounds.
If you think about it, it wasn't very long ago when we scoffed at people who carried pagers or pocket cell phones or notebook computers. Today, they're commonplace because they often confer a competitive advantage. (of course we still scoff at them in theatres and restaurants :)
Think you'll never go for a wearable computer? Check out this story about a professor creating wearable underwear:
